Sawyer Preservation Woodlot Association

A forest legacy started by Otis Sawyer.
In the early 1930"s this woodlot was chosen as a "demonstartion Woodlot" and was actively managed for a diversity of species. His decendants formed this association and a trust fund was created to provide necessary financial support for its maintenance and development.

To preserve the 28 acre woodlot for future generations by:
- continuing to actively manage and maintain its forest values including ongoing cutting and harvesting as trees are left to mature yet removed once in decline.
- values including; education, recreation and wildlife habitat

Welcome to Perth County

We invite you to discover what the Perth Stewardship Network is all about.

Our part of Ontario is an interesting blend of mostly flat to some hilly topography, rich soil types and suitable climate that historically was recognized by early settlers as prime agricultural lands. The landscape is now a mosaic of urban centers such as the City of Stratford and other towns (such as St. Marys, Mitchell, and Listowel) in an agricultural landscape. Spread throughout this landscape of extensive fields of corn, soybean and forage crops are large livestock operations and several smaller rural communities. Presently, about 7 % of the land is in forest cover.

Often the remaining forests, although small in area, are some of the most productive hardwood forests, producing a high quality harvest for landowners who manage them. Many of our Perth County farms have been built up and improved upon for more than a century, often by successive generations of the same family.

With this tradition of stewardship, it isn’t surprising that we are leaders in farming practices and adopting new agricultural technologies. Through the commitment of many individual landowners, environmental and natural resource features remain today and many newly planted windbreaks and buffer strips can be seen as you drive through the country side.

These people are the "Stewardship Leaders" that helped themselves to sustain natural resources on their properties and are willing to share their ideas and innovations with others.

How can you become involved?

There are many ways in which you can support the work of the Perth Stewardship Network:
Volunteer to work with one of our partner groups
