Middlesex Stewardship Council

County Profile

Middlesex County is located in the heart of Southwestern Ontario.  With a population of 60,000 it is home to some of the richest gently rolling agricultural land in Ontario.   The county is divided several times by the Thames, Ausable and Sydenham Rivers.  Middlesex County surrounds the City of London (pop. 331,000) on 3 sides and is affected by a wide range of rural/urban land use and development pressures.

Most of Middlesex County is located in what is referred to as Carolinian Canada.  This area contains some the most diverse habitats in Canada.  The Carolinian zone contains 1/3 of the endangered species in Canada.

While Middlesex County does not directly border any of the Great Lakes, watersheds within the county drain to both Lake Erie and Lake Huron.  Forest cover in Middlesex County is approximately 13 %, with a number of these woodlots being small fragmented woodlots at the back of farms.
