Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) protects and manages the natural resources of the province. In doing so, the Ministry contributes to the environmental, social and economic well-being of the people of Ontario, meeting not only today's needs, but also ensuring these resources are available for future generations.

The OMNR innitiated the Ontario Stewardship Program in 1995. The Ministry provides seed money to each of the 40 stewardship councils in Ontario, and provides the salary for one stewardship coordinator per council. This contribution has sustained the program and allowed for funds to be leveraged from other organizations with similar goals and mandates.

Additional OMNR funding goes to support youth employment opportunities through resource management hands-on learning. For information about the Ontario Stewardship Rangers Program visit.

Environmental Farm Plan

The Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) is a national voluntary confidential educational program for farm families. Delivered through free local workshops, participants are provided instruction on how to assess their on-farm risks and develop action plans for their farm. A workbook provided helps participants to rate the current level of environmental concern in up to 23 different areas on their farm.

Through the EFP program, producers are encouraged to develop farm specific plans and implement beneficial management practices (BMPs) and to continuously evaluate the environmental performance of their farming operations. Producers who develop EFPs may be eligible for technical and financial assistance to implement their on-farm action plans through the National Farm Stewardship Program and the Greencover Canada Program.
