As you enter Huron County, the signs welcome you to "Ontario's West Coast". Lake Huron forms the western boundary of Huron County and is a major influence on life in the county in a variety of ways, from "streamers" (snow squalls) off the lake in winter to the intensive summer recreational uses along the entire shoreline.

Lake Huron also helps provide a favourable climate that, when coupled with fertile soils makes Huron County one of the most productive agricultural counties in Ontario, if not Canada. In fact, if Huron County were a province, it would stand seventh in agricultural gate receipts, ahead of all four maritime Provinces. A variety of field crops and livestock are raised.

Huron County has a population of about 60,000, which increases by about 15 per cent with seasonal residents in the summer. The town of Goderich, once dubbed by Queen Elizabeth as "the prettiest town in Canada" is Huron County's largest urban area with a population of about 7,500.

Several rivers, including the Maitland, Bayfield and Nine Mile along with Lake Huron provide significant sport fishing opportunities. The amount of natural cover varies from a low of 6% in one township to a high of 28% in another. Once again, fertile soils and a favourable climate contribute to very productive hardwood forests. The quality of Huron County maple is among the best in the world and helps support several local wood using industries.
