Haliburton Hatchery Constructed Wetlands
Project Overview
The Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) at Fleming College, Lindsay proposes to lead partner in the design and installation of a series of constructed wetland components to be developed at the Haliburton Fish Hatchery, Haliburton, Ontario.
Constructed wetlands are an environmentally progressive, affordable green technology that involves the natural processes found in wetlands to remove contaminants from wastewaters. Used for many applications worldwide, they are safe, inexpensive, and aesthetically pleasing. In addition to th eir wastewater treatment function, they are also a tremendous resource for public education, teaching, and research.
With its importance and public profile in the community, the Haliburton Fish Hatchery is a natural location to develop a constructed wetland project that will be hightly visible and help treat the hatchery wastewater to a high standard for discharge to the environment. The wetlands will also provide increased flexibility and capacity for wastewater treatment at the facility in the event of future expansion.
Partners
Partnerships and funding support for this project will come from a number of sources and agencies. CAWT will be the lead partner in terms of design and construction, and other partnerships will be encouraged and fostered as the project develops.
