TD Tree Day at Dunham Park, City of Kingston

February 14, 2012
The Frontenac Stewardship Council is once again offering the Dr. James Day Memorial Education Award. This award of $1,000 will be presented to a graduating secondary school student residing in Frontenac County, including Wolfe and Howe Islands or in the City of Kingston who will be attending a Canadian college or university in September 2012 to study in an area dealing with environmental and/or natural resources issues.

Dr. James Day (1931 - 2011) was a member of the Frontenac Stewardship Council for many years. His passion for the environment led him to be involved in stewardship projects on Wolfe Island and in other parts of Canada. The council hopes that by providing this award to a young person with similar interests, the passion that Dr. Day had will be continued far into the future.

Students interested in more information about this award and the application process are asked to speak to their school Guidance Counselor or download the application form here: /councils/frontenac/files/Ed_Award_final_Feb_13_2012.pdf

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Greetings from the new Chair of the Frontenac Stewardship Council. I want to thank our outgoing chair, Dr. Gray Merriam, for his 6 years of leadership, and unfailing dedication to the cause of stewardship in Frontenac County. I am pleased that Gray has agreed to stay on as a member of the council, and more importantly, to take on the leadership of the recently-established Frontenac Stewardship Foundation, the charitable arm of the Council.

2011 has begun with a sad start for us, as we mourn the passing of one of our very active members, Dr. Jim Day. Dr. Day has been respected and well liked by all, and he leaves a hole that cannot be easily filled. As a token of our appreciation of his work we have named our new student bursary, the Dr. James Day Memorial Education Award, with the recognition that Jim strongly supported the involvement of students in the work of the Council.

Among a long list of initiatives we are pursuing this year, is the development of our "Stewardship Strategy" for Frontenac County. Through this strategy, we hope to better set priorities for the programs and projects we will pursue and support in the future, under our three core program areas:

·
Aquatic ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, and wetlands;
·
Rural landscapes, including forests/woodlots, and active and abandoned agricultural lands; and
·
Education and awareness of current and emerging environmental topics.

When a draft of the strategy is available, it will be posted on the website, and we would be pleased to receive your comments.

If you are in Frontenac County, and you want to pursue environmental and resource stewardship, I encourage you to contact us with your project proposals, and whether you are in the County or not, I encourage you to donate to the charitable Frontenac Stewardship Foundation.

Gord Rodgers, Chair

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRONTENAC STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL COORDINATOR

Thank you for visiting our website. The fact that you are visiting our site tells me that you too have a vested interest in Frontenac County. The Frontenac Stewardship Council has been in existence for 12 plus years and our geographic area of interest encompasses Frontenac County, including Wolfe & Howe Islands. For more than 12 years the Council has seen many dedicated volunteers pitch in to maintain and enhance all that makes Frontenac County a unique place to live, play and work.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all that have volunteered their efforts. I have had the good fortune to work, live and play in many corners of this great Province but, by far, this part of Ontario has offered me the most diverse outdoor opportunities. I look forward to working with past, current and new partners across this beautiful landscape.

The Frontenac Stewardship Council is run by volunteers that currently reside in communities across our area of interest. I am inspired by the enthusiasm, commitment and knowledge that each of the eleven Council members possess.

The Council meets for a couple hours each month to discuss and decide how best to get the communities, groups and individuals from our area of interest involved with stewardship initiatives for the area. Stewardship to them is all-encompassing to include: hosting environment-related awareness events (i.e. loon workshop, forest products workshop); supporting lake & watershed planning (i.e. Fourteen Island Lake, Salmon River Watershed); fish & wildlife habitat enhancement (i.e. walleye spawning shoals, tree planting, bald eagle platforms); wetland enhancement (i.e. Bayfield Bay marsh) and; much more. However, none of these initiatives are possible without the help of folks such as you.

I encourage you check back often as we will endeavour to update our website with new interesting events, projects and communication products.

Some exciting initiatives the Council is working on for 2011 include:

· a summer family fishing day

· grade 8 water curriculum program

· lake plan study

· Frontenac County stewardship plan

· development of an education award

· tree planting projects

· fisheries assessments

· working with landowners on stewardship plans

· multiple wildlife talks

· and much more...

The Frontenac Stewardship Foundation has been a couple years in the making and the Council is excited about unveiling and establishing this new entity in 2011. The Foundation's charitable status will now provide access to new additional funding opportunities with which to accomplish much more in and for Frontenac County.

For more information or to become involved or to seek support for your initiative, or to inquire about making charitable donations to the Foundation, please contact either me or any of the Council members that you may recognize from your community.

Yours in stewardship,

Cam McCauley, Coordinator
