WELCOME TO THE ELGIN COUNTY STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL HOME PAGE - Where people of the county and natural resources get connected.

Overview of the County and the Stewardship Council
The County of Elgin is situated in the heart of southwestern Ontario along the north shore of Lake Erie and bordered by Middlesex, Chatham-Kent and Norfolk Counties to the north, west and east. A largely rural municipality, Elgin County has some of the most productive farmland in all of Canada, which has contributed to agriculture being the main economic driver. The County covers about 460,000 acres, with a population of approximately 46,000 people. Natural cover averages about 13 percent with higher values in the west compared to the centre and east. This is mostly due to soils and topography. With 99 percent of this land base privately owned, this has presented many challenges, but also opportunities with growing a land stewardship ethic across the county.
The stewardship council has responded by developing different community based environmental programs that are innovative, meet the needs of landowners and provide a greater sense of community for all the partners involved. Part of a larger provincial stewardship network of more than 43 stewardship councils, we are part of Ontario Stewardship, a provincial program supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. With $10,000.00 in "project seed money" allocated annually, a paid OMNR employee and a Commercial General Liability insurance policy, we are able to lever other resources to develop these environmental initiatives.
