We hope that the various sections of this site will provide you with an overview of the Durham Land Stewardship Council and the many programs and partners that we are involved with in our efforts to support stewardship throughout the Region of Durham.

Join our Contact List

The Durham Land Stewardship Council maintains a contact list of local landowners and residents who are interested in receiving notices of upcoming workshops, events and stewardship-related news.    If you would like to be added to our contact list, click here to download the Durham Stewardship Contact List Request Form and either mail, fax or e-mail the form to Carole Seysmith, Stewardship Coordinator, or give her a call at (905) 713-7375.  You can choose to receive information by e-mail or postal mail, however those who join the e-mail list have the added benefit of receiving links to information that may be too large to send by regular mail.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN PLANTING TREES AND SHRUBS ON YOUR PROPERTY?

Bulk Tree Order Program for Landowners

If you are interested in obtaining seedlings for the spring of 2009, please submit your requests as early as possible.

The Durham Land Stewardship Council provides seedlings at low cost to private landowners in Durham Region who would like to plant trees and shrubs for conservation and naturalization purposes.  In some cases, landowners may also be eligible to receive grants to help subsidize tree costs.   Tree seedlings (2-3years) will be available for pick-up in mid to late April of 2009, but must be pre-ordered by calling the office or sending in the 2009 Bulk Tree Order Form.  For more information, please call Carole Seysmith, Stewardship Coordinator, at (905) 713-7375 or carole.seysmith@ontario.ca.

Council Vision:

Working together with the stakeholders of Durham Region through proactive stewardship supporting ecological sustainability for present and future generations.

Introduction:

Durham Region is a diverse, rapidly growing municipality with a unique blend of rural and urban communities and a wide array of economic activities ranging from manufacturing to agricultural. A large percentage of the Region's estimated 507,000 residents are concentrated in the municipalities along the Lake Ontario shoreline, an area that is continuing to experience tremendous growth. Approximately 90% of the 2,600 km2 area of Durham is privately owned.

Durham Region is geographically transected, east to west, by the Oak Ridges Moraine. This significant glacial landform extends from Northumberland County to the Niagara Escarpment. Much of Durham Region's estimated 21% forest cover is located on the Oak Ridges Moraine or along the corridors formed by the numerous streams that originate in the Moraine and flow south to Lake Ontario or north to Lake Simcoe or Lake Scugog.

The Durham Land Stewardship Council provides community-based programs that target the diverse needs and interests of local landowners. High quality resource management and land stewardship programs are achieved through a combination of education, information, and community projects. The Durham Land Stewardship Council is comprised of volunteer landowners, individuals and representatives of local community groups and agencies dedicated to the stewardship of Durham's natural resource features.

Goals of the Durham Land Stewardship Council:

  1. Provide land stewardship services to the residents of Durham Region through information exchange, workshops and projects.
  2. Improve cooperation among government and non-government organizations offering land stewardship services or information to Durham residents.
  3. Improve resident access to, and therefore effectiveness of, land stewardship services offered by government and non-government organizations
  4. Access and develop funding mechanisms to address local stewardship needs and concerns in Durham Region.

We are always looking for feedback on stewardship-related issues and project ideas.  Please e-mail our Stewardship Coordinator, Carole Seysmith or contact her at:
