WELCOME TO THE BANCROFT AREA!

The boundaries of the Bancroft Area Stewardship Council encompass portions of Hastings County, Peterborough County, and Nippising District. Located in the rugged and rolling highlands of Canadian Shield country, this region boarders on Algonquin Park to the north, Renfrew and Lennox & Addington Counties to the East, Haliburton County to the west, and Peterborough County to the south. The Town of Bancroft is the largest population center, with smaller villages outstretching north to Whitney, east to McArthurs Mills, south to Millbridge, and west to Apsley.

Encompassing roughly 635,000 hectares, this rural region is characterized by many pristine cold-water lakes and rivers, forests and mineral deposits. Rough topography, abundant water and poorly drained soils limit access to many areas. Land ownership is mixed, with roughly 60% Crown and 40% private ownership.

The settlement of the Bancroft region was based on the logging industry, which continues to be a primary basis of the local ecomony. The unique area geology supports a cyclical mining industry, while agricultural and industrial sectors are very limited. Tourism and recreation have become an important four-season industry with the potential for widespread expansion.

Whether you are a permanent or seasonal resident, visitor or recreationist, we hope you will enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor pursuits that this area has to offer while also being a good steward of the land and our natural resources. Please take some time to view our website and find out more about the programs and services that we offer for local property owners and resource users.
